In honor of my grandmother Serach, whose spirit still lights up the room, and in celebration of all musicians, past present and future, who keep us connected in times of upheaval.

A few years ago I found a box of postcards that were sent to my grandmother between 1926 and 1937. They were written in many different languages to and from locations all over Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa, mostly from her young musician friends who were also traveling the world, blossoming into their young adulthood. She was in her twenties then and had eloped from her native Palestine with a young violinist, my grandfather, who she met on a boat coming home from music school. He had played his way across the Atlantic in the ship’s orchestra, and she was now paying her way through Europe teaching piano. This was an increasingly treacherous decade, and when life became too dangerous, her friends scattered, and she and my grandfather escaped to Brooklyn. She would teach piano the rest of her life, and bequeath to me her piano, on which many of these songs were written. This album is dedicated to her, and to the eternal lineage of musicians, who, through necessity and joy, keep us listening.
