Here’s more exclusive bonus footage (not available on the DVD) from Marco Benevento’s new DVD release: Marco Benevento & Friends Live in NYC : The Sullivan Hall Residency
It’s towards the very end of the set when Marco slams into a bluesy riff reminiscent of The Allman Brothers’ “Southbound” with Stanton Moore of Galactic providing an appropriately southern and uptempo pocket. Marc Friedman steps in with a bass run that is thick and fuzzy, entering at acute angles from deep places. Marco’s energy propels this improvised ditty into overdrive before coming to a quick and satisfying conclusion to wrap up the first set.
Those in attendance will recall that this song jolted the lighting into such a frenzy that the strobe light behind Marco became jammed, and that despite his efforts to create a groove to encapsulate the strobe (and thereafter to get the lighting technician to turn the effect off), Marco opted instead to end the set, saving his most creative crowd-incorporation for the second set. That clip (entitled “Crowd Control” for obvious reasons) is featured on the DVD and displays the talents of this trio in addition to master guitarist David Fiucynski.
